No, not the 2012 novel that made the New York Times best seller list. I'm talking about the heinous act, committed on April 14th, in which 276 girls were abducted overnight.
For those of you who may be unfamiliar, this incident took place in Nigeria. The girls, who range in age from 15-18, attend a boarding school in the town of Chibok. Those precious gems awoke to gunfire that night, as members of Boko Haram set the school on fire, forced the girls into vehicles, and drove off into the night. Three weeks later, we know nothing more about their whereabouts. They're simply gone.
I knew very little about this travesty until yesterday. At the end of bible study, when we traditionally go around the room and share our prayer requests, there was just one... Our co-leader, Jayne, shared that these girls have been on her heart and asked if we would partner with her and her family in prayer for their return.
So, last night I begin looking for more information on the abduction. The details were few, but heart-breaking all the same. The girls are very likely being sold into sexual slavery. Though the Nigerian government maintains that they are doing their best to find the girls, it doesn't appear that any progress is being made.
Despite this grim outlook, we are not powerless to sit here and simply watch the horror story unfold. We can spread the word, fast, and petition our friends and loved ones to join us in prayer until these young woman are returned home. And that is precisely what I implore of you today.
For the next 40 days (today through 6/14/2014), I will be fasting and praying for our Chibok sisters. Please consider joining me twice daily in prayer at 7:15 am and pm, central standard time. Take comfort in Genesys 50:20 and be steadfast in prayer!
