February Fitness Feature - Meet Cecilia

As you may recall, my goal for 2015 is to periodically feature some of the amazing women I have the pleasure to call friend.

This month, I'd like to shine a light on my friend to the southeast, Cecilia Carlton...

JS:  Okay, Cecilia.  Please tell the folks a little about yourself
CC:  I’m a 42 year old single, but recently engaged, mother of 3 beautiful daughters, ages 22, 17, and 14.  I was born and raised in Arkansas, but now I reside in Chicago.  I love to drive home a few times yearly to see my parents and siblings.

I’ve been told by many that I’m a good listener and problem solver.  I’m considered the “voice of reason” for many of my friends and coworkers.

I love everything about nature.  The look, smell, sound, and feel can all be relaxing. I just learned how to grill, so my love of nature makes grilling outdoors even more enjoyable.   I love comedy, because it feels so good to laugh.  Horror movies are my least favorite because there’s usually death and a lot of sadness. But, I must admit that I did enjoy the suspense/horror “World War Z” movie.

JS:  I can totally understand why you're considered the "voice of reason".  I bet that characteristic comes in handy as a teacher.  Speaking of which, how long have you been teaching?
CC:  I have been teaching for 20 years.  I’ve taught at the grammar school and junior high school levels.  This year, I’m teaching 5th grade. Teaching is so rewarding because I’m preparing our children for the future.  Many of my past students are now pursuing their college degrees in various studies.  I’d like the think that I had something to do with it.
JS: I bet your girls, as well as those energetic 5th graders keep you quite busy!  How do you balance career, motherhood, and health?
CC:  Balancing my life can be very challenging.  However, I’ve learned to prioritize activities monthly, weekly, and daily.  I keep a family calendar that I check nightly for upcoming meeting, school activities, and appointments.  Then, I can decide when I can socialize, cook, exercise, etc.

I spend a lot of time with my daughters.  They are old enough to enjoy some of the same extracurricular activities as me.  We shop, watch movies, and dine out together.

When I first started clean eating, I forced it on my family because we all needed to change.  Now, my daughters help with the planning and cooking  of meals.  They request chicken parmesan, sautéed kale, and kale soup quite often.  So, clean eating has become a lifestyle for all of us.

JS:  It's always a blessing to see that family is starting to get involved in these types of lifestyle changes.  No doubt your daughters help you stay motivated to eat clean.  What motivates you to stay active?
CC:  I’m motivated by my results.  I’ve lost 20 lbs.  I didn’t really expect to lose this much.  I just wanted to eat better.  Next, I feel good and look good.  I’ve been told that my skin glows and that I look younger.  You can’t beat that!  I don’t have as many health concerns such as cramps, headaches, and indigestion.  I’m healthier than I’ve been in years!

JS:   That's an outstanding testament to your hard work!  I'm proud to say that you were able to benefit from Beachbody during that process.  Please share with the readers what your favorite Beachbody program is.
CC:  My favorite Beachbody program is Hip Hop Abs.  I participated in an 8 week challenge.  It was awesome!  I never was bored because the workouts changed daily.  I lost several inches off my waist.  Who doesn’t want a smaller waist?   I especially enjoyed the last 4 weeks.  I knew all the moves and had proper form so, it was time to just have fun with Shawn T.  I felt like I could really dance!

JS:   I know that's right!  I've bet you've got the moves like Jagger now.  ;)   LOL.  So, with all of your experience dealing with children, what tips could you offer parents and youth leaders to help encourage the younger generation to practice better nutrition.
CC:   My first tip is to set a good example for our youth.  Let kids see you eating healthier and working out.  Don’t just tell them, show them.  My students and my own children see me eating healthy all the time.  Do, I cheat?  Yes, but I still make good choices and monitor portion size.

Next, share your goals and results.  My students and my own children know that I’ve lost 20 lbs.  They also know that I have a goal to drink 100 ounces of water daily. They help to keep my water bottle filled.  I shared with them my experience with Hip Hop Abs.  My daughters completed many of the workouts with me.  They’ve seen me succeed, and they’ve seen me fail.  However, they always see me attempt to do better the next day.

My last tip is to provide children with the resources needed to set and accomplish their own goals.  Keep healthy foods and snack around.  Allow them to help plan and cook meals.  Provide fun fitness activities as a family.  My daughters love to swim, so we go swimming often.  We have all transitioned to natural hair styles so that hair maintenance would not be a major concern.  Give children the “okay” to have fun!

JS:  Excellent advice, Cecilia!  Thank you so much for giving us your time!  :)
